Though a new government has been installed in the Philippines, the question on human rights in the country still remains to be one of the most pressing issues of the people.

Cases of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, illegal arrest and detention, and other forms of violations of the people’s civil and political rights are still unresolved with many victims awaiting justice. With the government’s design to continue the Oplan Bantay Laya – the counter-insurgency plan that even UN Rapporteur Phillip Alston has identified as the source of severe human rights violations in the country – the future of human rights is as bleak as what it was during the past administration.

Women have been victimized and are still being victimized by the culture of impunity that pervades the Philippines and its armed forces. According to reports of the human rights alliance KARAPATAN, 153 women activities from various sectors have been victims of extrajudicial killings since 2001 and 31 have been forcibly disappeared.

In this light we urge you to join us in the Forum on Human Rights in the Philippines and the Campaign to Defend Women’s Rights.

The forum can also serve as a venue to interact with and hear directly from Lana Linaban, a prominent leader of GABRIELA Philippines. GABRIELA is the biggest national organization of women from various sectors in the country and has been at the forefront of women’s concerns for rights and empowerment for 25 years now.
