Find Gao Zhisheng

Joint Statement:

Beijing Human Rights Lawyer Gao Zhisheng Disappeared for One Year,
Demand Chinese Government Disclose Gao Zhisheng’s Whereabouts
Find Gao Zhisheng
4 February 2010
Beijing human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng was taken from his home in Shaanbei (northern Shaanxi Province) on 4 February 2009. He has now been disappeared for one year. We call on everyone to continue demanding that the Chinese government disclose Gao Zhisheng’s whereabouts.
A few days after Gao Zhisheng was disappeared, an article entitled “Dark Night, Black Hood, Gangster-Kidnap” was published on the Internet, disclosing details about how he was tortured on 21 September 2007. The shocking content exemplified the Chinese government’s sanguinary persecution of human rights lawyers.
What Gao Zhisheng did was released three letters in 2005 demanding that the Chinese government stop persecuting Falun Gong members and initiated a rights defense hunger strike campaign demanding a halt of the suppression of human rights activists. However, he was then subjected to a series of persecutions. After a secret trial in December 2006, he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, on the charge of “inciting subversion of state power.”
On 14 January this year, there were reports that when Gao Zhisheng’s elder brother Gao Zhiyi went to the Beijing Public Security Bureau to ask about Gao Zhisheng’s whereabouts, the public security officials told him that Gao Zhisheng went missing after he had lost his way on 25 September 2009. Gao Zhisheng was under 24-hour surveillance. How could he lose his way and disappear? When asked about Gao Zhisheng’s whereabouts by foreign journalists at a regular press conference on 21 January 2010, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said, “The relevant judicial authorities have decided this case, and we should say this person, according to Chinese law, is where he should be.” A Chinese citizen disappeared under tight official surveillance. We are extremely worried about Gao Zhisheng’s safety.
We call on everyone who is concerned about Gao Zhisheng’s fate to continue demanding that the Chinese government disclose Gao Zhisheng’s whereabouts!
